Site Visits
On the 7th October 2020, the faculty of Engineering students, together with two lecturers from faculty of Engineering, and a representative from Ministry of Mines and Energy embarked on a trip to Havana Secondary school to view an off-grid Mobile Solar System which is being used to power the temporary structures at the school where the learners are being taught. The aim of the visit was to appreciate how the system works so as to consider a similar approach for the Living Lab.
On the 22nd November 2021, the team visited the settlement of !Kharoxas, which is situated approximately 8 km south of Groot Aub. Groot Aub is part of Windhoek Rural constituency which is one of the ten constituencies in the Khomas Region, figure 2. It was the district capital of the Windhoek Rural electoral constituency until September 2017, when it was incorporated into the capital. Groot Aub has a population of approximately 6000 inhabitants. The site is rocky and would require a 4X4 vehicle to access. The village has 13 households and each household cater about 5 people. The people of !Kharoxas farm mainly with vegetables, goats, cattle and chickens. The livestock and poultry farming of the area is on a small-scale basis. The village has one borehole which suppliers the community with water. Figure 3 shows the map of Windhoek Rural constituency where !Kharoxas is located.
